Photo Wednesday
I'm feeling a bit artsy tonight. I like this one....to me it's hot just because
 it is so obscure.

Floating in the pool....
Sailor Boi's pool needed a major overhaul, which was finished this weekend...and
we finally got to swim (and float, and play!!) What a great weekend..... Last
night we swam naked in the moonlight. Fabulous.

Next weekend I have family coming into town, so I'm planning, shopping and
cleaning every night this week. Bah! Saturday we're doing a barbeque pool party
at Sailor Boi's. It should be a great time.....however, the two of us will have to wear clothes this time!!

Congratulations
Today, Kay Ryan was named our country’s official poet laureate by the Library
of Congress. In addition to being a great poet who pens little nuggets of images,
Kay Ryan is also an out lesbian, living in California with her life partner. If
you aren’t familiar with her poems, it’s time to check her out. She
is known for her compact writing that revels in wordplay and internal rhymes–she
uses little images to see an ordinary thing in a more subtle and deeper way. And
these poem are wonderful. Of her own poetry, Kay said, “...an almost empty
suitcase, that’s what I want my poems to be–few things. The reader
starts taking them out, but they keep multiplying.” (more...)

Here’s a couple to give you a taste (and a desire to read more!)

A CAT/A FUTURE

A cat can draw
the blinds
behind her eyes
whenever she
decides. Nothing
alters in the stare
itself but she's
not there. Likewise
a future can occlude:
still sitting there,
doing nothing rude.

THINGS SHOULDN'T BE SO HARD

A life should leave
deep tracks:
ruts where she
went out and back
to get the mail
or move the hose
around the yard;
where she used to
stand before the sink,
a worn-out place;
beneath her hand
the china knobs
rubbed down to
white pastilles;
the switch she
used to feel for
in the dark
almost erased.
Her things should
keep her marks.
The passage
of a life should show;
it should abrade.
And when life stops,
a certain space—
however small —
should be left scarred
by the grand and
damaging parade.
Things shouldn't
be so hard.

I'm back!!....
Sailor Boi and I have returned from our trip to the Atlanta Gift Show. It was
exhausting, but fun and productive. We ordered some new glasses that are pool
and patio friendly (and sooo cool!), pet collars and leashes, some new framed
prints, some really cool flasks and beer steins, and of course, holiday goodies.
Plus tomorrow I have orders to put in for colorful leather portfolios, checkbooks
and such, laptop cases made from recycled materials, and some coasters and doormats.
It will take awhile for all this new stuff to come in and get photographed,
but I'll keep you posted on the new items as we get them in.

Even though we were so tired each night, we did get a chance to eat really
well. I love the Midtown area of Atlanta--there is a bunch of really good restaurants
all within walking distance. We tried a couple of new ones, but I just had to
go back to Einstein's on Sunday night. It was as great as I remembered. Fabulous
food, great atmosphere, service and drinks. I just wish it was closer to home
so I could go more often!! We stayed again at the Wyndham in Midtown. I heartily
recommend it....the staff is wonderful and we once again had a great room with
 a good view.

But that being said, I'm looking forward to catching up with my email, the
news and sleeping in my waterbed tonight. Plus, Houdini the bunny has been so
cute this evening.....I just have to stop and pet him every few minutes!

The week from hell
This week is our summer camp program at work......30 hyped-up kids. I'm coming
home exhausted each night. And Friday, as soon as the kids go home, Sailor Boi
and I take off for a weekend in Atlanta for the Gift Show. I'm really looking
forward to the weekend...I'm just hoping that I have enough energy left over to
enjoy it! Sorry for the lack of posting, but it is about all I can do to fix some
dinner!

Aaaack!!
The last two weeks have been raining. No, that doesn’t reflect the real
experience–it has been a deluge! Last Monday, lightning hit the wires outside
of my house and took out several things–including my computer (sigh). Then
as if that wasn’t enough, six leaks sprouted in my house. Notice I didn’t
say ‘roof’, because it is hard to say that four of them are roof leaks.
My roof is only two years old (it was replaced after the hurricanes) and the drips
are in an area that is underneath my (very dry) second story. It is very strange
and disturbing. I hate feeling helpless against things that are out of my control.
The water is obviously getting in somewhere and running between the floors for
awhile before it drops into the first floor. I guess I will have to figure out
a way to get between the floors with a flashlight (while it is raining) and see
if I can track down the leak. Things are never easy, are they? It should be enough
to get up in the morning, go to work, love your neighbor, treat everyone like
you wish to be treated, be kind to animals, tell your friends and family you love
them, help those less fortunate, and pay those bills that society tells you must
be paid. But sometimes all of that isn’t enough. Sometimes things are just
plain sucky.

I’m going over to Sailor Boi’s house tonight when she gets off
work. She makes me feel better....I can use some smiles, laughs, hugs and kisses.

United nightmare
I haven't enjoyed flying for years, but this trip was by far the worst I've
been through. The culprit? United. The trip from Orlando to Colorado was uneventful
(and I have to say that the Orlando airport is the quickest and most efficient
airport I've been through). But the return trip was something else. Since I
was relying on group transportation from the event I was attending, I arrived
at the Denver airport four hours before my flight. Luckily, I had a couple drinks
at the bar....I didn't know it then, but I would be needing them! At the gate,
I was 'involuntarily bumped', along with 11 others-no explanations, no apologies
from the gate clerk with a bad attitude--just a "go to the service desk
and they will refund your ticket or give you a free one-way". I didn't
want a free ticket....I just wanted to get home after a long business weekend!
After hiking to the other end of the United terminal, there was a line of 30
people at the service counter! I figure that the long wait (30 minutes) is designed
to calm you down....however, it didn't really work that way with me. When I
got to the counter, I was told that the next available flight was almost two
days later--even though there are at least 12 flights from Denver to Orlando
every day. At one point I told the clerk I was going to stand at the counter
until they found a way to get me home!! I also asked why I was bumped. It turns
out that it depends on how much you pay for your ticket. Those of us that buy
our tickets early and get a good price are more likely to get bumped than those
who buy them at the last minute. After an hour of trying all kinds of flight
combinations they finally found a way to Orlando--via an overnight in Chicago.
They did put me up in the Hilton, but since my bag was already in Orlando, it
wasn't my idea of a good time. When I checked into the hotel at Chicago, the
desk clerk told me that he had customers that told him it was the fourth or
fifth time that United had 'involuntarily bumped' them! And my flight in the
morning seemed to show this is a systemic problem. They were again asking for
people to volunteer to take a later flight, the standby list was 72 people long
(!!), and they ended up involuntarily bumping people from that flight also!
I am not going to be flying United for awhile--they are undergoing serious problems....I'll
wait for them to get it sorted out.

Then I get home and that evening the lines outside are hit by lightning, taking
out one of my phone lines, my computer and my TED (a real time electric usage
 moniter). (sigh!) What a week.
