The Land of the Free – well sort of!
I have been terribly quiet over the past month. Having both kids home full time for the summer had many ANY writing near to impossible. But a recent topic has forced me to sit down and start banging out again.
I’ve tried avoiding political topics. I always seem to open a huge can of worms, but I just COULD NOT keep quiet on this one.
A new Constitutional amendment has been proposed which would make only marriages between a man and a woman legal in the United States. This issue seems to be gaining some momentum as the election rounds begin.
I will admit, I haven’t had enough time to read all of the reasoning behind the necessity of such an egregious amendment. Mainly because I would get so sick reading them, I’d have to stop and come back later. From what I have read, I’ve been given two reasons for this amendment – Christian values and “Moral” code.
So, first of all, by using a Christian (or any religious) set of values to create laws, does this not violate a MAJOR tenet of this country – separation of church and state? I mean school prayer has been such a hot issue for years, why would creating an amendment based on religious values be ok?
Second, where does it stop? Would the next step be that only marriages sanctioned by a church – perhaps even a specific religion like Christianity – be the only legal marriages?
Finally, since when did the morals I live by have to be the morals YOU live by? I mean really! This could go so deep it would be scary. It’s against my morals that anyone have their children in a day care or school/preschool program longer than six hours a day. It’s against my morals that people smoke. (Wouldn’t that be a fun one!!!)
Gay and lesbian marriages are the least invasive institution. How does it affect anyone else that two men or two women have committed to each other? Are the wonderfully esteemed (choking and gagging here) members of Congress worried that if they “allow” this that it may cause THEM to turn gay? Contrary to some of my favorite jokes with my mother being gay or lesbian is not catchy!
I am so disgusted at this point that such an amendment could reach paper. The very thing that so many people have died for is being threatened by our own citizens, our elected officials. Don’t think it will end here. This may not directly affect you, but when we allow politicians to decide what morals we should live by, eventually there will be something that will infringe upon your rights.
