Choice

Do we really have choices we make in life?  Are our lives and the direction they take guided by us?

“Choice is just an illusion created by the people in control.”

This is a line in the movie The Matrix Reloaded.  And out of that entire movie, this line rings in my head still.  Who makes the choices?

When an employer tells you to take on the workload of five people or you’re fired, is that a choice?  We are in a time with an incredibly high unemployment rate – similar to that of the 1930’s.  We are in a time when very minimal jobs are being created so those that are unemployed are staying unemployed.  Where’s the choice?

Some companies have gone a step further.  They force employees to make a choice – your job or your children.  Just the fact that corporations get away with forcing the workforce into making this choice is a horrible reflection on where this country is, but people actually choose their jobs over their family.

Here’s another way to look at this.  Can you make choices when offered only some of the information?  Let me give you an example.

I was raised Catholic, learned about the Bible and all it said from the creation of the world to the life of Christ.  This, like many history books, are taken as absolute truth, but think about it – who wrote it?  Did God fax the book of Genesis outlining how he created everything?  Man wrote it and I find myself lately wondering, what aren’t you telling me and why aren’t you telling it to me?

So do I make an informed choice when the information I receive is partial and perhaps even skewed?  Is that really a choice or a manipulated conclusion by those in power?

I have to admit, I’m terribly conflicted now.  I feel like I’m in a hole controlled by everyone but me.  Editors and agents hold my writing fate in their hands.  My husband continues to have to deal with an ex-wife who falls short in the self-pride category believing he should support her even after divorcing her.  We send out resume after resume and are at the whim of the recruiter/hr person/manager to even get a phone call.

So my question still stands.  Do we really have choices we make that determine the direction of our lives?
