A Beautiful Sunday

May in Baja Arizona is my favorite month. Here in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains the early morning down-slope breeze is cool, inviting open windows and doors at which my cats sit looking longingly at a patio lizards and a rackety ladder-backed woodpecker.

Our highs this time of year push into the mid–eighties, nicely moderated by our low humidity. The desert is in full bloom and it hasn’t rained in six or seven weeks. This is a pleasant time.

Katherine is busily replanting the patio garden. The petunias, those in full sun, are getting ‘leggy’ so they’re being replaced with zinnias, which will be better able to withstand the triple digit heat of June.

Sometime today I have to practice a little motorcycle love and change the oil in one of the bikes, something I do every two thousand miles. I checked service records yesterday and was surprised to find I have ten thousand miles on my bike’s tires. That means I’m probably going to have to pop for at least a new rear before I make the Tucson, Chattanooga, Charleston , W.Va, run to the National BMW Rally this July.

I look back with a certain sadness on the days when I could change a motorcycle tire myself, rather than having to take a wheel to the shop. I just can’t break the bead on a tubeless tire by hand, the baleful consequence of progress (tire technology) and age (my own.) I’d best be about the oil change.

An Environment of Surfaces…Reflection 1.2

Not all surfaces are public. Your thoughts, sensations, or emotional states are private, but they are nonetheless essentially surfaces. They are objects of awareness in exactly the same way a tree, or another person, or your car parked at the curb is.

What makes private surfaces private is the fact that they are yours, in the same way that private property is yours… because you own them. It would be a mistake to think that what makes the private surfaces private is that they are ‘inside’ something…your brain , or your mind. Your private surfaces are not in your mind or anything else. They are your mind, or consciousness.

Thus there are no such things as "unconscious" thoughts, or impulses, of which we are unaware, lurking somewhere. No 'real you' to be discovered.
