Copy Editors
Now that the Arizona Daily Star has started advertising for copy editors, those of us who complained probably owe it to the Star to admit that we weren’t all that sure what the hell a copy editor did. For the most part we were concerned with spelling and grammatical blunders.
Well, the copy editor looks out for those blunders, but he or she does a lot more. To get the true scoop on this, and for some fascinating reading, visit The Slot. If you’re as word-intoxicated as I am you’ll waste a bunch of time exploring this site: http://www.theslot.com
The Slot’s boss, Bill Walsh, calls copy editors ‘journalism’s noble misfits.’ Read all about ‘em here: http://www.theslot.com/copyeditors.html

The Bush Estate
I don’t remember where on the web I read it, but it’s a helluva good idea: Let’s stop referring to that luxury home surrounded by lots of open land in Crawford, Texas as a ranch. Let’s call it what it really is: an estate. To my knowledge there is no ranching or farming going on there at all. No cattle, no pigs, no horses, nothin’. It no more deserves the title than does a big spread in the Hamptons.
The closest Bush comes to the horny-handed-son-of- toil tradition of the Texas cattle man is his hat. He has no right to a 'ranch'. As a spoiled son of privilege he’s welcome to his estate.
Let’s give it to him.

Annoying Housekeeping Note.
I took down today’s post and re-posted it to cure a display problem. Firefox sometimes enlarges the type face. If this is corrected, peachy! If not I’ll just let it go.-- Art
