Unintended Absence
Like Le Pretre Noir, I've been experiencing writer's block, not wanting to write a story that's due on the 15th. I've told myself "It's not about thinking something up, it's about getting something down" (Julia Cameron), but the nature of the story is someplace I don't want to go. Yesterday I started writing it, and magically that's led me back to the blog too (funny how that works), but if you don't hear much from me the next week, it's because I'm spending time on this tight deadline and another one from my lunch money job. I love show biz.

Sunday Musings
Mike of This Classical Life recently posted this Bible verse: "And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. ..." (Rev. 21:2)Mike's purpose was to compare translations and what is lost in the pc process, but I read this verse with new eyes, eyes that have designed two weddings of my own and assisted mightily in another for a stepchild. Folks, areas of my nonexpertise are vast oceans, but I do know that brides spend a lot of time preparing for their wedding days. One of my former students recently married (at Disney World, Gawdhelpus, her lifelong dream--and I didn't stand up and scream, "You studied classical violin for 5 years and you're walking down the aisle to the score of The Little Mermaid?), and it came out that the couple had dated for 3 years and been planning their wedding for 2. I couldn't help wondering what they were going to talk about for the rest of their lives with no more wedding to plan.
While the humble weddings I put on could not compete with the 6 digit price tag on
- a wedding party more properly classified as a small town
- dresses of prices that would cover a year's mortgage
- Cinderella's coach
- formal sitdown dinner for 100 with a castle backdrop
- a flock doves and butterflies released over the wedding couple (Did anyone seriously consider the possible consequences of that?)
- $300/night hotel bills
- Mickey and Minnie Mouse attending the reception,
Nevertheless, I can unequivocably state that brides prepare for their wedding day, and they want their person to be as beautiful as nature and science can make it.
I wonder if we, individually or collectively as the church, spend any comparable effort on our souls.
