Without Protesters, There Would Be No War And without Deep Woods Off, there would be no mosquitoes. Boy, this is about the dumbest thing I have read on the war so far, and that's saying a lot. On the other hand, look at the gurning fool (a double major in poli sci and history, just what the world needs. Learn a trade, kid) who wrote it - he looks like he could be the President of Stupid.

Pro-War "Catholics" Heckle a Priest During Mass! Step One: The Pope denounces the war and endorses the anti-war movement. Step Two: The US Conference of Catholic Bishops, following the lead of their Holy Father, condemn the war. Step Three: A priest in Troy, NY repeats the message of his Pope and his Bishop during a homily. Step Four: Angry "Catholics" walk out of the Mass and heckle the priest, outraged that he would disrupt church with the message of someone named "Jesus." Early reports suggest that "Jesus" hails from the Middle East, in what is now Israel, and is the leader of a small band of fanatics, called "Apostles." Attorney General Ashcroft has urged anyone with further information on this "Jesus" not to share that information with Christians at prayer, lest it disturb them.

Ich bin Ein Peace-ies It was bound to happen sooner or later: Inspired by the patrio-culinary genius of Freedom Fries and the heroic spectacle of fat Southerners pouring wine into toilets, the Europeans are beginning a boycott of American products. They are even renaming pastries: The Amerikaner has been renamed the Peace-ies by some German bakeries. Now, it would be inconsistent to ridicule the Freedom Fry people while applauding similarly silly behavior overseas, but as a wise man once said, "Consistency is a sign of a weak mind." In that spirit, then, I say: Go, European boycott, go!

Russians Not Competing With US Nuclear Inspections Hey, let's go to war with Russia! If we hurry, we can invade in May, the same month Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa!

Are You Still Talking About the Inspections? That's SO September 10 Check it out: Newsweek breaks the story that Bush Administration deliberately withheld information clearing Iraq of the charge of having WMD. Does anyone care? No. Does anyone really notice? Nope. Are we still fighting a senseless war to "disarm" Saddam of a fictitious arsenal that the administration has known all along didn't exist? You bet!

Canada Feels the Sting for Shunning Freedom Fries! Some wing nut on Ebay is refusing to ship his stuff out if the winning bidders are from Canada, Mexico, France, or Germany. Quoth this Georgia-based genius: "At the present time, we do not ship to, or accept bids from, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany or any other country that does not support the United States in our efforts to rid the world of Saddam Hussein. If you are not with us, you are against us." George Washington would be so fucking proud.

Military Families Against the War But the TV had led me to believe that only Blame America Firsters were against this war! What am I to think?

British Missiles Found in Iraqi Armory The missiles, manufactured by the wonderfully-named Wallop Defence Systems, were found alongside those Russian weapons that our government is so hot and bothered about. Funny: nary a peep from Washington about the British weapons. The British government, by the way, says the missiles might have reached Iraq via "the black market." Oh, indeed. Most black marketeers are always well-stocked in the following items: Fake Rolexes? Check. Allen Iverson sneakers? Check. Bootleg 50 Cent CDs? Check. Al-Harith missiles and anti-shipping mines? You bet!

Halliburton Gets First Iraqi Oilfield Cleanup Contract, Stunning Absolutely Nobody On the Face of the Earth Note also that the article says Cheney divested himself completely from Halliburton in 2000. Not true, as stories we have linked to point out: Cheney still gets up to $1 million per year from Halliburton. But if one thing had anything to do with the other thing, that might mean this war was about something else than the liberation of the Iraqi people, and that's obviously not the case.

Pope Endorses Anti-War Movement Stop sapping the morale of our fighting men and women, Your Holiness! Boy, the Pope is about one press release or statement on Vatican Radio away from getting Vatican City designated a rogue state. It's funny how little coverage this gets in the press: When do we get to hear Rush and O'Reilly say that the Pope is just as responsible for our dead Marines as the Iraqi soldiers who killed them?

There have been a number of these stories about the effect the war is having on the stock market, many of them indicating that the Dow has been up based on confidence.  It just strikes me as disgusting, and I am hereby proposing that we move the New York Stock Exchange to downtown Baghdad to give these traders a little perspective.

Over the past 24 hours, one group of Iraq-related news stories that has been getting a lot of coverage is the Pentagon’s claim that Iraqi soldiers are violating international law by faking their surrender and dressing up as civilians. I’m not going to defend violations of international law, but if you want to bring that up, General Franks & Co., then you certainly have to acknowledge the notion that the U.S. has done the same.

And, as if to prove without a doubt that we’re not the good guys anymore, here are more hijinks. Basically, trying not to kill innocent people is proving to be too much a pain in the ass for the military. It seems to me that the above "violations" and this analysis of the Iraqi army actually fighting back are the beginning of the groundwork for all-out genocide in coming days.  And, if your sense of irony is well developed, it might seem funny that this bit of news was released the same day that the U.S. has indicated that 500 Iraqis were killed over the past two days.

"When Did You Stop Beating Your Wife?" Alert So, are you anti-war or do you support the troops? That's the question being asked repeatedly in the press. The distinction is not anti-war and pro-war, it's anti-war and pro-troops. I have a problem with this for a variety of reasons. To wit: If the anti-war side had our way, all of the troops who have died so far would still be walking the earth. Wouldn't the best way to support the troops be to get them out of a place where people are shooting at them? It's an Orwellian abuse of language similar to the "pro-life" and "pro-choice" labels (Life? Choice? I thought we were talking about abortion!). Just as an obiter dictum: This story points out that there were between 100,000 and 200,000 anti-war demonstrators, matched by a counter demonstration of about 700 pro-war folks. Wow! 700 people in the largest city in the United States! How do you think they were able to round them all up?
