S TOP THE PRESSES! I have found evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq! Big news, everybody! Unfortunately, the US military is proposing to use the aforementioned weapons, not Iraq. Yep, in contravention of both the 1925 Geneva Convention and a treaty ratified by the Senate in 1997, our military wants to use banned chemical weapons in Iraq. What was it Walt Kelly said? "We have met the enemy, and he is us"?

Jello Biafra Was Right About Jerry Brown! Oh, Governor Moonbeam, how could you: Jerry Brown supports cops shooting protesters and bystanders. If you scroll down, you can see a particularly choice example of the effects of "non-lethal" ammo on the human body.

That's a $287 billion deficit. Wait, Sorry, that's $460 billon. Again, my mistake: Just the $540 billion then Key quote: "There is now a huge structural budget gap. It isn't simply a result of the war, 9/11, the tax cuts, and the recession. The gap is growing because neither President Bush nor the Republicans in Congress have shown any inclination to cut spending, despite endless promises to do so. And despite the president's insistence that we will not simply punt our obligations to the next generation, we show every intention of doing just that. "What makes today's deficits scary is that there is no sign that they are temporary. The largest chunks of the tax cuts will take effect in the coming years. What's more, the administration and congressional leaders support big-ticket items that would result in higher spending (Medicare prescription-drug benefit, private Social Security accounts) and lower revenues (fixing the alternative minimum tax, yet more new tax cuts)."

TODAY'S TOP FIVE

Special Syracuse victory hangover edition!

Wave Of Democracy Sweeps Afghanistan, Renamed "New Athens"; Golden Age of Enlightenment, Prosperity Begin In Wake of US Invasion Well, no, actually: As it turns out, the Hamid Karzai Puppet Show (ahem, I mean, "government") grows weaker by the day while the Taliban continues to grow. Key quote: "There is little to stop them. The soldiers and police who were supposed to be the bedrock of a stable postwar Afghanistan have gone unpaid for months and are drifting away." Get excited, Iraqis: You'll be enjoying these same remarkable benefits this time next year, when the US is at war with Syria, or possibly Narnia.

"Authorities say the 'phony Pope' can be recognized by his high-top sneakers and incredibly foul mouth" Life imitates art.

Sy ria, Iran to be Next Beneficiaries of Miraculous, Afghan-style Democracy "But the most important debate of all is one that is only being hinted at. The fight about postwar Iraq is also a fight about whether and where Bush will again deploy troops to root out terrorism and transplant democracy. Military officials report that using force against Syria or Iran once Iraq is stabilized is a 'live issue' in Bushland." Bushland sounds like a terrible place: I bet it is always dark and rainy there, like Nimh.

The Military's War on the Press Three journalists have been killed so far in a US attack on the Baghdad hotel where much of the world press has been staying. The US claim that "snipers" in the hotel were firing on troops has been dismissed by the press. Additionally, a US cruise missile hit Al-Jazeera's Baghdad headquarters today, something the US called "a mistake": They made a similar "mistake" last year when they bombed Al-Jazeera's headquarters in Kabul.

Exercise Your Right to Free Assembly, Get Shot in the Face The Oakland Police opened fire with "non-lethal" ammunition at a demonstration yesterday, hitting longshoremen who weren't involved in the protest as well as demonstrators. Check out that photo.
