New Yorkers React to Smoking Ban Appropriately, With Violence Between terrorism fears, homicidal cabbies, subway loonies, copious air & noise pollution, a hike in the subway fare, and Williamsburg, New Yorkers have a lot to be pissed off about these days. Now they've got a city wide smoking ban to be irate about, and oh are they ever. Speaking of the ban, I would just like to say to all smokers in NYC: two tears in a bucket, two words for you... SUCK IT!!

"Lebensraum" is German for "Preemptive Deterrence"
"Preemptive Deterrence," meanwhile, is Neocon for "war without end, amen." That's the new term coming from the Bush Administration's gang of zealots who want to "remake the Middle East, spawning American-style democratic values and squelching terrorist activities." Goal one for this gang consists of launching an illegal war against the dictator Hussein; mission accomplished. Goal two for this same group of poisonous toads (Cheney, Perle, Wolfowitz, Feith, Bolton, Reich, etc.) is to send more Americans to their death in Syria. These thugs are being aided in their bloodthirsty quest by members of the US Congress, who have heroically introduced legislation that would enable the White House to impose sanctions on Syria if it does "not take immediate action to end its occupation of Lebanon, support for anti-Israel terror groups, and development of weapons of mass destruction." The legislation is co-sponsored by Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY, who, like 429 other members of Congress does not have a child in the US military) who said we need "proactive" wars on terrorism, apparently not understanding that this war has been pitched as a "reactive" gesture for the 9/11 attacks, but that's another story. The point is that the government is dangerously out of control: This is not a war for oil, because Syria has no oil. It's an ideological war being pushed by a group of fanatics who place the security of a foreign country and the profits of multinational corporations above the interests of the United States. Let me put it another way: If we go to war with Syria, democracy is finished.

TODAY'S TOP FIVE: Now with 50% more war than other leading brands!
Israel Adds to Calls for War Against Syria Lots on this today from all sources. Powell is threatening sanctions, while Bush is just threatening: the insane prospect of war with Syria seems to get more plausible every day.
GOP Eyes Jeb Bush for 2008 Nomination (scroll down) This presupposes that President for Life George Bush won't cancel elections by then because they provide "aid and comfort" to our enemies, Mongolia and Spain. Seriously, if GWB wins in 2004 and Jeb wins in 2008, I can only pray to a merciful God that I will be indefinitely detained in a camp somewhere in the plains states by then.
80 percent of Iraqi Archeological Museum's Treasures Lost to Rumsfeld and Fleischer's Heroic Looters "At more or less the time the world was watching Saddam Hussein's statue being torn from its plinth, looters were vandalising statues from the great civilisations of Nineveh and Babylon with equal energy. Heads of ancient stone now lie on the museum floor. The bodies from which they came have been pockmarked by powerful blows." Ah, but who cares about that stuff? All the country's oil fields are in secure hands, people! And just think about what kinds of neat antiques they must have in Damascus. . .
Today Damascus, Tomorrow. . . Brussels? "US Ambassador Stephen Brauer lashed out at the government for its refusal to seal off the Iraqi embassy or take steps against any Iraqi officials in the country. In an interview with the Flemish financial daily De Tijd, Brauer went as far as to suggest that the perceived lack of cooperation could result in Nato headquarters moving from Brussels to elsewhere." Good for you, Ambassador Brauer! I'm sure glad that my tax dollars are going to line the pockets of crazy idiots like yourself!

Way to go, troops. Thanks to your efforts, the American people remain free – from high gas prices! Of course, this war may not be ALL about oil. Read this article by Robert Dreyfuss from Mother Jones. Do it now!
This is how it starts. "Top British officials said on Monday that Washington and London had no plans to invade Syria, but Damascus had ‘important questions’ to answer about its own weapons programs."
"‘People have got to know that we are serious about stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction,’ Bush told reporters." Wait – it’s about weapons of mass destruction now? Whatever happened to liberation? I get so confused! And, from a political standpoint, wouldn't it be wiser to remain hush-hush about the WMD's until we actually find one or two in Iraq? Besides, WMD's are so old hat now. How about an exciting reason to invade Syria? I mean, we know it doesn't have to be true, so why not make it fun? Let's just say that Syria is planning on blowing up the moon or something. That'd be a hoot!
