Bloom County for a Blast From The Past

Care for a little cultural and political deja vu? Next time you have a few moments, check out the early years of the Bloom County comic strip.

The good news is the strips are just as funny and relevant today as they were when first syndicated.

The bad news is they're just as timely and relevant today as they were when they first appeared.

Substitute a few names -- Bush for Reagan or Norton for Watt (she even worked for the guy), for example -- and the topics and issues are nearly identical. There's talk of Michael Jackson's androgyny, the chilling effect the Far Right is having, book burning, the trouble Democrats have finding a viable presidential candidate, gun control, and oil exploration in Milo's Meadow.

As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same. In this case, that ain't a good thing.

PS -- Ever wonder what happened to Berke Breathed, the Pulitzer Prize winning creator of Bloom County? Check out the official Berke Breathed web site.
