Turning away from the grimly predictable scenario currently being scripted by Bush & Blair, I found myself pondering, rather uncharacteristically, matters somewhat less earthbound. I was put in mind immediately of a couple of favourite utterances, both close to my heart, the one sardonic & the other more sober.
Jules Feiffer - so much more than just a cartoonist - said: "Christ died for our sins. Dare we make his martyrdom meaningless by not committing them?"
And Jung said, very late in life: "We can never finally know. I simply believe that some part of the human Self or Soul is not subject to the laws of space & time".
Stained Glass
The quality of light: this,
a piece of late evening sky.
How darkness can shine:
last of the sun, first breath
of the stars, a waxing moon.
Judas walks out of the small room.
They are still dining. No one knows
but Jesus and his head is turned away.
They can’t escape, these protagonists,
caught between ruby and green,
the dark blue light,
the black bars of lead.
