Dick Jones' Patteran Pages
A patteran is a coded configuration of leaves, sticks and stones left at the roadside by Gypsies to communicate with each other. This is my digital version, left for any passers-by...

DEPARTMENT OF UNBELIEVABLE HAMFISTEDNESS (Part 2)

Having laid myself open to ridicule & scorn by buggering up my past picture files (as described below), I seem to be paying a price beyond mere embarassment.  Now I can't upstream new pictures.  When I place them in the sub-folder of the Watched Folder they remain there, apparently unrecognised by the My Pictures tool (which is enabled).

If any passing Loserland adepts have a bead on this, I'd be grateful for advice.  (Lawrence - understandably, I have to admit somewhat ruefully - is keeping his head down after a flurry of pleas for help from me).

TONY ON THE SLIDE..?

The Independent reported a National Opinion Poll survey as revealing that 51% of voters want Tony Blair to quit.  54% reckon that he lied over the threat posed by Iraq & 68% believe that the inquiry convened to investigate the failure to find WMD will produce a whitewash report.

There is, of course, a danger of post-Hutton fatigue setting in.  In the same way that Bush is hoping to tough out the wrathful aftermath of the recent damning doubts concerning the existence of WMD expressed by some highly placed sceptics, so Blair too may hope for a prolonged inquiry period.  However, it's difficult to speculate what kind of diversions during that time would draw the fixed attention of the presently highly focused media.  David Beckham falling pregnant or Jordan putting her tits away might just do it.  Otherwise this show is going to run & run.

GYPSIES - TRAMPS & THIEVES?

I caught a glimpse of a Daily Express headline the other day.  (This is a newspaper that I wouldn't wrap cat litter in so glance was as close as I wanted to get).  It seemed to be celebrating the fact that a recent campaign of theirs to prevent European Roma from entering the UK in large numbers had met with success.  Either that or a twitchy & increasingly xenophobic Home Office had made up its mind on that one without the help of the Express.

How fortunate that there remain Roma in sufficient quantities throughout Europe to provide a sort of universal pariah now that there exist international laws proscribing even carefully coded racism against the usual targets.  It is certain that, with the lowering of the old barriers between nations in Europe, Roma will move away in increasing numbers from such sites of long-term institutional bigotry & persecution as Romania, Albania, ex-Yugoslavia & Czechoslovakia & Bulgaria & into the Western democracies.

Disenfranchised, largely destitute & accustomed to living outside legislative systems that have served only to underpin the active prejudice of the 'host' community, they will provide an easy target both for the neo-conservatism of the Western European states & the increasingly be-suited & insidious 'nationalism' into which fascism has mutated in recent years.

All good news, of course, for the readers of the Daily Express.
