LOOKING BEYOND
You hold the paperweight
on your open palm
and peer, shortsighted,
into its strange disorder -
the shattered galaxies, starbursts,
the frozen comet spray.
"My life today", you said,
"feels like this looks".
Eyes closed, you smiled towards
your summer wedding, all
the old parameters restored -
the men in suits, the Sunday roast,
the Orange Day parade,
the priest you fear, the dog
you love, the certainties,
the certainties.
"Before you put it down",
I said, "look deep.
The more you look,
the more there is beyond".
"Beyond is the problem", you replied,
placing the paperweight
back on the shelf.
"Beyond is the problem".
