TORTURE’S NOT NEW, BUT NOW IT’S NEWS
Under the above heading, the relentless John Pilger has penned an excellent article for the UK Daily Mirror. Many words have been written in the short time since the first torture photographs were published; many more will yet be written. As usual Pilger extrapolates from the particular to the universal, reminding us that systematic torture has been tacitly sanctioned by Great Britain & the United States in other theatres of war throughout the latter half of the 20th century.
Nothing can match the revulsion inspired by such shameless evidence of coordinated, systematic, ritualised humiliation. Underpinning it perfectly, however, is the cant & hypocrisy of a president braying an apology from the moral high ground of the White House for deeds perpetrated by low-lifes not fit to wear the uniform of this man’s army. One would almost rather have foregone Rumsfeld’s additional shit-eating on the grounds of its compounding a felony.
There will be further sickening revelations to come. And each one will trail after it shocked protestations of shame & horror from the very men whose political ineptitude & military recklessness created their context.
