At 10.56 GMT this morning Paul Bremer handed to Prime Minister Iyad Allawi a piece of paper - not the most auspicious of historical acts - & with that Iraq became an entirely independent, self-governing nation ready to join the democratic community.  Bush & Blair smiled benignly on the modest ceremony & looked forward to a bright future.

Dave Brown, cartoonist of The Independent newspaper, took a different perspective.

The skylarks are going to have to wait. One glass of wine too many compounding the damage of a 3-hour sleep last night.
