Dick Jones' Patteran Pages
A patteran is a coded configuration of leaves, sticks and stones left at the roadside by Gypsies to communicate with each other. This is my digital version, left for any passers-by...

JONES/SEMPLE CLAN IN CHILD NEGLECT HORROR!

Emma & I went out tonight without either child for the first time in…er… Well, I can’t remember exactly how long ago it was but I do recall that the old king was still on the throne, we took a horse drawn cab & we dined by candlelight.

This time it was to the new Thai/Malaysian restaurant in Hitchin & we were in company with three of the couples with whom we shared childbirth classes before Reuben was born. Such a strange experience.  Independently, & at different times, both Emma & I kept looking up in sudden animal panic, wondering whether we’d left them both in the car or outside on the pavement. I necked a couple of high strength Bangkok beers, one after the other, to still the spasmodic terrors. As usual after swiftly administered alcohol I found myself in deep conversation with two football experts, me braying judgements & evaluations in a loud confident voice, unwilling (or unable) to permit  ignorance to inhibit the expression of an opinion.  Fortunately both of them were in a far more advanced state of refreshment than I was & we all got on terribly well. I think I may be going with the two of them to watch Watford play Portsmouth at home later in the season.

All very enjoyable, but I’m not sure I want that kind of wear & tear on the nerves again for quite a while…
