Dick Jones' Patteran Pages
A patteran is a coded configuration of leaves, sticks and stones left at the roadside by Gypsies to communicate with each other. This is my digital version, left for any passers-by...

LOOKING BEYOND

You hold the paperweight

on your open palm

and peer, shortsighted,

into its strange disorder -

its shattered galaxies, starbursts,

its frozen wavetop spray.

"My life today", you said,

"feels like this looks",

and you smiled towards

your summer wedding and

the old parameters restored -

the men in suits,

the Orange Day parade,

the priest you fear, the dog

you love, the certainties,

the certainties.

"Before you put it down",

I said, "look deep.

The more you look,

the more there is beyond".

"Beyond is the problem", you replied,

slipping the paperweight

back on the shelf.

"Beyond is the problem".
