A Fitting Quote for the New Year
I'm still testing my new look out. Please pardon me for any inconvenience I am placing on the Updates engine of Salon Blogs.
I found this quote from Emerson which I particularly like: "Take the life you have been given--the only original gift you will ever receive--and use it to make the only original contribution you will ever make, to be the person you are capable of becoming."
No pressure. You know, I imagine it would be similar to Gandolf giving Frodo the ring for the first time. I paraphrase: "Yes, here's this wretched ring. It's not a very good ring, no. But you're not a very good Hobbit now are you, Frodo? Anyway, here's your chance to contribute something worthwhile to Middle Earth. Succeed and you will be greater than the Kings who have walked Middle Earth. Fail, and people will continue saying the things they've always said about you. So my little small, insignificant, lazy, Hobbit, what do you say?"
Mike's Note: I edited the last paragraph because I mislead a reader into thinking Tolkein wrote these words. He did not. I made them up and didn't clarify it.
