If this isn't an indicator that Spiderman 2 will beat the record for three-day weekend grosses (held by Spiderman at $115 million), then I don't know what is.

Spiderman 2 thrashed the first day records, bringing in $40.5 million dollars.  The previous record was made by, surprise, Spiderman, which had an opening day gross of $39.4 million.

Spiderman 2 also set the record for first day grosses for a weekday.  To place this in a bit more perspective, this new record is nearly $ 6 million dollars better than The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, which set the record by bringing in $34.5 million dollars in its opening day last December.

I'm thinking this will be the top grossing film of the year.  And in doing so, it will surpass the total gross for the original film.

Note: Some information taken from the Associated Press article Spiderman 2 Takes in Record $ 40.5 Million.
