A few comments on April Fool's Day. I am normally a fan of semi-quasi-venerable Tom Tomorrow's site here on Salon. But I think his advocation of humor: that of Neal Pollack is, in a word, obscene.
I find no humor here. Yes I'm a card carrying pagan - but I like the sound of the golden rule ( I paraphrase): "Do unto others as you'd like to be done".
I wonder what the Cheneys' think when they access this site? (Embarrassment? Shame? Horror? Enragement! Well, no they don't access this site...).
I think the operative word here is respect. I want it. You do too. On a basic societal level, Hell, on a basic human level.. Because no matter how we might be disgusted with his political view - he's still people. American just like you and I. And this is JUST WRONG.
I believe fervently in free speech. I disagree with shutting down traffic in San Francisco or New York. I disagree with throwing rocks through embassy windows. But I do think that for a (let's face it) minority opinion to change ideology it must conform to a certain minimal moral integrity. It must espouse all that is good and fair in the "great debate" that insues in American politics. It must maintain dignity. It must maintain equity. It must retain responsablity. It must retain an openess to all opinions. It must retain respect.
That's just my opinion.
Anyone who disagrees, anyone who thought this was "a great jab" at Cheney, feed me. I'd like to know who I'm dealing with here in salonblogsaville.
God, I'm feelin' mean tonight. :=).
