From this desk, the view is that Salonblogs is following the exact pattern we've seen established on BBSs, Usenet, and other online communities:
Founding members establish a robust community. Community attracts members of like-minded individuals. "Old-timers" clique develops. Cohorts develop. Spamming idiots infiltrate. Quality of community degrades. Old-timers begin outward migration. Community becomes a ghost town inhabited by freaks and misfits.
We aren't at the ghost-town level yet, and there is a solid community of core writers still anchoring the concept, but I see the pattern is holding even here, despite initial predictions that Weblogging would be organically immune to the effect. There's a thesis in here somewhere.
