Back to the troops
This was in Iraq, in my opinion, a tragedy on many different levels. Having grown up during the Viet Nam era I'm fully aware what a war does to its victims and I'm not talking about those killed in the action.
Bob Harris points me to the following disturbing article:
Avert eyes. Look away America
American troops today admitted they routinely gun down Iraqi civilians - some of whom are entirely innocent.
"Like, the only way to get through s*** like that was to concentrate on getting through it by killing as many people as you can, people you know are trying to kill you. Killing them first and getting home."
And in an admission that directly contrasts with the line coming out from the Pentagon's spin doctors Specialist Corporal Michael Richardson added: "There was no dilemma when it came to shooting people who were not in uniform, I just pulled the trigger.
Folks, this should make you shudder.
What makes a soldier a soldier is that he is basically brain-washed to follow orders. That's the way the military works. There's no other way of stating it more simply. Forgot my badge? Just try getting on base. Doesn't matter that I've said "Howdy" to the same guys for the past three months - I'm not getting in. That's why we have the best military force on the plant of late. We are, as the institution of America, the best brain-washers. If you don't believe me consider that a full 70% of our population think that Bush is doing a wonderful job as president.
I've never killed anyone myself. You know, lined 'em up in the crosshairs and pilled the trigger. Can't imagine what that would feel like. And I also can't imagine what the above troops are going to feel when they finally read that they've been duped by the (optimistically) unfettered historical rendition of the Bush administration's "weaponsgate".
How would you feel?
