What recession? - or - A Kama'aina's Rant
Oahu has two local airlines (Aloha - peel back the top like a convertible in mid flight - and Hawaiian), two local newspapers (The Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star bulletin. Great sources for local events and news but not much else), an entire town full of expensive hotels (that we affectionately refer to as Waikiki) and a whole slew of shopping centers (Ala Moana comes to mind).
Not a day goes by these days that the papers aren't whining about how tourism is "off" of late. Tourism, if you aren't aware, is Hawaii's main export.
That's precisely where this rant begins. The richanatrix and I decided that we both need a vacation - and when amongst us all isn't that true? Where do Hawaiian's go on vacation? No, John, it isn't Albuquerque - it's another island. In our case, Kauai. Granted this was planned for the Labor Day weekend - the truly "end of summer". Trouble was we couldn't get a flight out and the rental cars on Kauai were all booked up. Huh?
Yep, that's right. The airlines fly out of Honolulu once every hour from 06:00 to about 21:00 every day and we couldn't get a flight despite the fact that the traditional $50 dollar flight has recently been increased to $90. There, in a nutshell, went my vacation...
So I say, to all you hoteliers, merchants and airlines, "Shut the fuck up!"
