Grrrrr
Some of y'all might have noticed that rich's blogs of late have been somewhat less than cheery. Yep. Downright grumpy I am. And stories like this one do little to rosy up my disposition. Seems that our very own State Department is all mad at China and stuff for "backsliding" this year on several key human rights issues.
Last December, China pledged during talks with the United States to allow U.N. investigators to look into allegations that China jails people without due process, tolerates prison torture and restricts religious freedoms.
"We've made clear during the course of the year that there's been backsliding," [State Deptarment lackey] Boucher said. "And unfortunately that pattern has continued ... We've been disappointed."
Boucher also noted a series of "troubling incidents," such as a lack of due process for a Tibetan who was executed, the arrests of a number of democracy activists[...]
Of course I'm outraged at China's human rights example. Um, but don't we do that too?

I haven't witnessed a more blatantly conspicuous example of the pot calling the kettle black in at least a week or so. Is it really impossible for the State Department (part of the entire Machevellian dubya regime) to spot parallels between their own sanctimonious hypocrisy and that little anathema down in Cuba affectionately referred to as Gitmo? Need I say more.
As for torture - first define it. We're not known to practice torture on American soil . Where is that Ali Hassan al-Majid anyway? I can pretty well picture how his interrogation is coming along right about now - Ali with his feet propped up sipping a non-alchoholic pina colada. Yeah. |

We do enjoy a certain amount of religious freedom though. In fact if you freely associate yourself with a certain specific Bush-sanctified fundamentalist religion, you can even get a government grant at the OFBCI. I didn't see any members of the fellowship Ár nDraíocht Féin lining up for their subsidy checks though. |

As far as freedom of speech in this country goes. Here's what these anti-war protestor did to get arrested.
Protesters chanted and sang as they approached the White House, but U.S. Park Police began making arrests after they exceeded the 25-demonstrator limit for Lafayette Park, across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. |

| God may bless America. Frankly I'm a little disappointed. |
