Is it my imagination
or is Bush sort of beginning to understand that he might have, just maybe, underestimated the ease of creating a perfect working democracy and a functioning viable country from a people that don't know the meaning of the word "democracy" and a whole lot of sand? Can you imagine nagging thoughts like that beginning to permeate that thick skulled and cobweb infested monkey head of his? Despite this or perhaps because of it Bush continues his classic and continuously tiresome bellicose buffoonery.
Having launched the Iraq War in defiance of the United Nations Security Council and repeatedly vowed to “go it alone,” the Bush administration finds itself back at U.N. headquarters seeking help in stemming the costs, both in blood and dollars, of occupying Saddam Hussein’s former realm.
Speaking of dollars, Bremer pulled a few numbers out of his ear today:
Iraq will need “several tens of billions” of dollars from abroad in the next year[....]
BREMER SAID Iraqi revenue will not nearly cover the bill for economic needs “almost impossible to exaggerate.”[read undoubtedly more than original estimates]
The figures, which must be added to the $4 billion the Pentagon spends each month on military operations in Iraq, offer the latest evidence that the price of the Iraqi occupation is growing substantially.
But there's another little problem as well. Seems as though Bush doesn't have many friends anymore. Even little Tony isn't asking little George to come out and play anymore.
OVER THE PAST week, efforts by senior American diplomats — including a personal visit to U.N. headquarters last Thursday by Secretary of State Colin Powell — failed to win new pledges of money or troops from any of the world’s major powers. With the United States determined to control both the military occupation and the distribution of reconstruction contracts, many large nations are treating Washington to a taste of its own hardball tactics.
Let's toss in a stipulated $480 billion dollar deficit next year and I simply can not fathom how even the staunchest neocon wouldn't be scratching his head and thinking, "You know this really is a mess."
And now it's too late to do anything about it.
In a major revision to the nation’s Clean Air Act, the Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday issued a final rule exempting thousands of older power plants, refineries and other facilities from adding pollution controls when they do certain maintenance work. Industry had lobbied for the change, saying it would lead to cleaner production.
Now I can well understand how that might sound perfectly logical to someone like Bush. If I let power companies quit spending money to clean up the environment then it stands to reason that they could donate some of that there found-money to me. [End of thought process]. I just don't understand how anyone else (including many barnyard animals and some intelligent houseplants) can.
Lemme get this straight. Stop making me spend money to clean up the air and cleaner air will appear spontaneously. Uh Huh.
