| Hawaiian Fitness in Older Folks | | Or perhaps something else |
I don't write a lot of stories involving the Hawaiian environment but
occasionally I just can't restrain myself. This one happens to be one
of my favorites. I read a story about a seventy year old surfer by the
name of Kenneth Chun. His name really isn't this topic. There are a lot
of surfers in Hawaii. I have some realistic comment for the subject of this story that I recently read. You don't need to refer to it. I'll fill you in.
No this isn't my surfing story. But, Isn't she cute whether or not she can really surf. Get Real. Don't make fun of me just yet. | I'm
a little younger than these "old" kane (men). A picture of this guy
came with the story. Hah! I'm just not interested in this guy's
picture. Let's get reoriented, please. O.K. I personally know a
whole flock of these guys and/or girls. That's the whole point of this
sport orientation of our late days. There weren't a lot of girls loving
this sport when I was a kid but now there are a lot more. In my opinion
- that's a good thing. Well, the whole women's
surfing popularity story is a bit of an exaggeration but no untruth in
according to my personal so-called perlustration. There's a story in
the news about wahine in the surf. It's a nice story but come
around my beach at 05:00 on any Saturday - And where are the women?
Both the Kane and wahine deserve some mention. The wahine are the
prettier ones - that's it though. Let me start with that one. Now, give
me a break. |
| A
few Hawaiian surfing and beach facts follow. Yes, this is definitely my
funny part. If you're a woman and you want to lose your swimsuit -
let's talk about that.Relax, I'm being very patient. I'm just providing
some more Hawaiian "facts". The "real" experienced wahine don't wear
bikinis. No, I'm not kidding. Here's my experience here in
Hawaii. No one cares. Stick to an obscure beach. Those obscure beaches
are there. Don't stay in Waikiki. I'll tell you why - maybe - I think. I'm
going to ignore anything religious (no harm meant) but the Ohana
(family) in Hawaii is very important. Isn't that the same idea where
everyone hangs out? I don't know. How many beaches do you regularly
come from while you're engaged in your own normal family's activities
day? Of course my opinions are very regularly dismissed and that's
fair. If men want to go buff we're going to carry you off of "our" surfing beach and put you in some vehicle of one sort.... Heh Heh. Now
let's visit some of the more important things in my blogs that I feel
were more important than their or my previous.Where do I surf in Hawaii
- heh - nice try - a lot of people do know but we're not giving
up anything? The pictures offered today are partly from the Sunset
Beach on Oahu and the Pipeline - "famous" spots. Check out some of my
prior hints - they were "good ones". Here are a couple of my favorite
club members. Yep, na wahine (incorrect terminology but Salon is
missing the "correct" type or maybe just HTML is...> are surfing
just as well - when given equal opportunity at much needed experience
at, well, fun. |

I'm not that old but here is a famous big-wave surfer for nearly
sixty-three years - Peter Cole - we used to work with this guy. During
his first year in Hawai'i he won the 1958 Makaha International Surfing
Contest, the biggest contest worldwide at the time. Peter is now the
Chair of the Oahu Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, an environmental
organization working to preserve surf sites worldwide. He is still
surfing. I think he probably likes doing just that instead of
driving into the Military organization at 04:30. You might catch him
anytime at Sunset Beach on Oahu. Pete never said anything derogative about any of the things that we all had said who all worked with him.... | |
Rell Kapolioka`ehukai Sunn is the matriarch of surfing in Hawai'i. | She was used to be known as the Queen of Makaha | This
beautiful woman was a dear friend of mine up until 1998. (Jan 2 at that
- isn't that date a bitch - so to speak) She was born I believe in July
of 1950. My God, maybe I can mention the very cool things that she
accomplished. I'll mention a few because I'm from Hawaii too and maybe
I'll mention those (shall we call) "original" things. Rell was
one of the first five women inducted into the International Surfing
Museum's Walk of Fame. I'm sure that that was incredibly important.
More importantly for me on a personal basis is that she was an
incredibly friendly person. She was wonderful. Let's leave her story at
that. I honestly don't understand what more importance you should ever
need or want in regards to your own - or whatever. She is dead. I loved
her - so to speak. She lived
sometimes in Ewa of Oahu - just down the street from where we might
live. She had a whole collection of boards in her garage - that she was
willing to lend to some of us old boys. We took care of her boards ya'
know. | | Some
things that I recall about my friend, Rell. In her life, she created
something called the Menehune contest for at least 20 years that I
remember. The menehune can mean a lot of strange but wonderful
traditions in Hawaii but I'll make my explanation simple. Simply call
the Menehune "the small people". If they don't accomplish what they
planned in a day then something wern't wrong. That is the "club" that
Rell invented and that club was marvelous. Rell was a wonderful person
and I will miss her - and those who missed her I hope. Have a nice life folks. Be sure to get up early on days to surf. Please Remember Rell Sorry about this blog - I gotta go to surgery again, Rats.
