Part II: Where do the Best Guitars Come From?

I confess. I have been avoiding any nasty conversation about our President Brush. What has he done horrible lately? I prefer at least temporarily for a life involved with my own more fun.... Let's talk about some other boys who have let's say influenced or impressed some of my own "naughty" behavior. Do I love music? Oh yes. Do I play anything? Oh yes. For today's fun, let's start with my guitar.

My first buddy is Tom Petty. No big deal of course - but he did break his arm as well as I did. The doctors said that he would never play gain. Hah! We'll see about me next. The grip on my left hand is still excellent. I'll show you my guitar that I can't quite reach in the ways that you folks may or may not understand but I promise to do the best that I am able to play this thing just as well as I could.

Another one of my buddies is still with the Rolling Stones by the name of Keith Richards. Let's start this one easy.

O.K. Another confession. This picture is way too big. My guitar sits right next to my computers. Yep. If I want a break I can grab it no problem and guess what. It's plugged right into my computers and I can use my headphones.
Here's my guitar. This is my 1967 Cherry Red Fender Coronado XII. We'll go on with Keith. I don't think that he owned one of these. These are very very rare. I think that Keith could still afford one. I can't afford a new one.

Now stay tuned for rich's guitar tuning instructional piece for today- Ya don't want to miss this one:

A "normal" 6 string works just like this (order is from high to low notes):My 12 string works just like this (order is from high to low notes):

3G

O.K. I'm an old man. That's a given. I won't include any story today about Tom Petty - yeah he had a broken arm too - Same as I have. He's still playing pretty well. I'm still working on my own. I'm a little bit more interested in another guy's story who was with the Rolling Stones. His name was Keith Richards.

Why did I always enjoy the Stones versus someone called the Beatles? Well, one group was better than the others. Guess which one? (If you happen to be a Beatles fan - please go read someone else) I used to go to a lot of these concerts. Don't ask my about Mick, He's not my subject. Did you ever watch Keith? In every concert after every song he visited the slot in the curtain. Yep - every song. He got a newly tuned guitar and a freshly lit cigarette. He had ten or twelve guitars tuned for each and every concert. He had some Fender Stratocasters and some Gibsons as well. Do you people realize that he often used  different guitars for a lot of their "simple" songs.

Watch out. Don't tell President Brash: He did the "Russian Tuning Thing" - shame on him. OPEN G: D,G,D,G,B,D low to high. Known as "Russian Tuning". Since root chords tend to appear at the 5th string in open G, remove the 6th string, it just gets in the way. Songs such as Honky Tonk Women (their first hit recorded in open G), Start Me Up,Tumbling Dice, Happy, Brown Sugar, You Can't Always Get What You Want, and solo songs such as How I Wish are all played in open G.

OPEN D: D,A,D,F#,A,D low to high. Used on Street Fighting Man, Jumping Jack Flash & Child Of The Moon.

Nasville Tuning: Makes your guitar sound like a 12 string (ie. Mick Taylor's guitar on Wild Horses was in Nashville tuning). The first 2 strings are strung normally and the lower strings, replaced with smaller gauges, are strung an octave higher than normal. It gives it a nice ring like a 12 string. My goodness. Do you realize that Keith played 5 string Gibsons?

I have to go play mine now. Its sound is beautiful. Hey Keith, you don't have one of these do you?

Have a nice day folks.
