Teresa Wright
1918 - 2005

Teresa Wright died. She was 86. She goes way back. She costarred with Gary Cooper in The Pride of the Yankees in 1942. She was 23 or 24, and Cooper -- then past 40 -- felt a little awkward doing love scenes (in 1942 this involved a 1.5 second kiss) with her, because she was so young. But they were popular together, and costarred again in Casanova Brown in 1944.

Her first few films were her also her peak films. Her debut earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Sup Actress: The Little Foxes (1941), as Alexandra 'Xan' Giddens. The next year, playing Lou Gehrig's wife in The Pride of the Yankees (1942) earned her a nomination for Best Actress. She lost that but won for Supporting Actress in the same year* for playing Greer Garson's daughter in Mrs. Miniver (1942). Next, she was Charlie, Hitchcock's young heroine, in Shadow of a Doubt (1943) -- afraid of the truth of her Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten). In 1946, she was in The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), and she was opposite Robert Mitchum in the cultish noir western, Pursued in 1947.

She pissed off boss Sam Goldwyn by refusing to fly to New York to publicize a film, and he fired her in 1948. Her career pretty much fell apart after that, but she did costar with Marlon Brando in his film debut, The Men in 1950. Wright continued to act in films, on TV and on the stage. Her later films include: The Actress (1953), Track of the Cat (1954), The Restless Years (1958), Somewhere in Time (1980), and The Good Mother (1988). In her last film role she played Miss Birdie opposite Matt Damon in Coppola's The Rainmaker (1997). Wright was a regular on the daytime soap, "The Guiding Light," in 1986, playing Grace Cummings.

Besides the three Oscar noms and one win, she had two Emmy nominations, and two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: for Motion Pictures and for Television.

She was married to writer Niven Busch from 1942 to 1952. She married writer Robert Anderson in 1959; they were later divorced and remarried, says the AP obit.

* Wright is one of ten actors to have been nominated for both a Supporting and Lead Acting Oscar in the same year. The other nine are Fay Bainter, Barry Fitzgerald (who was oddly nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor [which he won] in the same year for playing the elderly priest in Going My Way), Jessica Lange, Sigourney Weaver, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Holly Hunter, Julianne Moore and Jamie Foxx.
