NEWSFLASH! The Dems DO Have a Backbone!

When Clinton was in the White House the Republicans thought nothing of bottling up his nominees to the courts for long, long periods of time. They used every tactic in their playbook to halt confirmation votes and prevent confirmation hearings and then spent much time spreading lies and innuendos in order to dirty the reputation of otherwise very well-respected members of the judiciary.

HALT!

Texas judge Priscilla Owen, a home-state favorite of the president's.

Now that the Democrats are doing the same the Republicans have suddenly decided that they don't want to play the game anymore. Like the kid you always hated in grade school who threw down the bat and walked off the field when he started to lose, the Republicans are acting like whiny third-graders. Suddenly they're talking of the need "to find an end to the downward spiral of accusations, obstruction and delay," in the words of Texas Senator John Cornyn. SO, I guess now that their own tactics are being used against them they're not so excited about the accusations and obstructions they themselves entered into the mix.

The best way to move beyond this matter is for President Bush to stop nominating divisive, radically Federalist judges to the judiciary. He could also re-nominate some of Clinton's appointees who never received a vote and stop re-nominating those nominated by his father that were not confirmed or those he has nominated once but were turned down by the Senate. Until these things are done the Dems should stand firm and stop every right-wing, strict-constructionist Bush nominee in their tracks, using all methods possible.
