Burning Lips and Lightning Nights

It's pouring rain here in Seattle and I love it. Not sure what I am gonna do this evening, have had calls from two different groups of friends about assorted things going on, most likely they'll end up at a club or bar getting sloshed which since I already did that on Tuesday I don't think I'm going to partake this evening.

The strange thing is that it is thundering so loudly that it set off the neighbors car alarm, lightning as well. So weird this late in the year.

I love being alone in my house, right now I'm making Spanish rice with fresh tortillas and my lips are burning because I cut up a jalapeno pepper and a carrot afterwards with the same knife and ate the carrot. Burning lips and lightning nights. Cool.

Dumb Lawsuit of the Week

I thought for sure I was going to have to write about an attendee of Siegfried and Roy's suing for "trauma" related to the attack on Roy by the angry tiger. Instead today word comes down that the NFL is being sued by the parents of a girl paralyzed in an automobile wreck by a drunken football fan.

Yes, now the NFL is ultimately responsible for the behavior of the fans who attend football games at stadiums. With this reasoning I guess the NBA, WNBA, NHL and other sports leagues will also take on a new role as nannies to their fans. Maybe they  can also be held responsible for not only their fan's drinking but also for what they eat and what they wear.

I hate football and never attend football games, even UW games, but I'm opposed to these types of lawsuits because as tragic as the circumstances are, the fault lies with the drunken driver and not with the stadium or team owners or the league.

You cannot buy beer after the 3rd quarter at the stadium and you can only buy two beers at a time, those seem like reasonable safeguards to me. What would the family want? No doubt for beer to be banned entirely and I'm sure they can count on neo-prohibitionist MADD to be right there with them.

No, once again the no-responsibility nation is showing its true colors. Remember, when you do something wrong in the US you can always find someone else to blame it on.

Progress... Slowly but Surely

King Mohammed's reforms are expected to be approved by parliament.

The King of Morocco, Mohammed IV, has implemented a wide-ranging set of women's rights initiatives which include reformation of divorce and marriage laws.

This ia a wonderful thing and shows that the king is making progress against the conservative Islamic opposition in Morocco. I am sure following these changes many more will come.

When I used to live in Morocco there was considerable unease about what would happen following the death of Hassan II and the ascension of his son, Mohammed, to the throne. Rumors abounded about the prince's partying ways and sexual proclivities but I have to say I am impressed with this king. He has dismissed the worst of his father's corrupt and authoritarian advisors and kept the best ones around. He has also made progress in changing Morocco for the better with initiatives like marriage and divorce reform as well as a package of economic reforms.

Morocco is a powerhouse of Africa and a light to the rest of the Arab and Muslim world. The king is making the right decisions and Europe and the US must continue to support him in his attempts at reform.
