Doesn't It Suck

When all your friends are tired because they work 40-hour work weeks and you want to go get a drink because you're just a lame-ass student who does nothing with his days but goes to school and then the gym or yoga ( and blog of course).

I think it does.

Cut Off

There are many great things about being a student, lively intellectual debate on a daily basis, meeting cool new people, stimulating one's brain, these are all things I love. However being poor is NOT one of them.

While doing thesis research in Greece and Turkey this summer I ran up a large international roaming bill on my T-Mobile world phone. Since I got back I've neglected to pay it due to other fiscal demands like rent, tuition, books, bills and other  more pressing needs (haircuts, gym dues etc...)

Well today the piper came a' callin' and my cellular phone service was shut off until I can pay the full bill, which will be next week. I'm scandalized because my phone hasn't been turned off before and also shocked at the huge amount I owe, which will necessitate some drastic measures to pay, but I'm willing to forgo further yoga classes and postpone my next haircut so I can once again be connected to the wireless world through T-Mobile.

Lunar Eclipse

It's a bit cloudy and grey in Seattle right now so I'm thinking we won't be able to see the much talked about lunar eclipse. Here's hoping for a break in the clouds.

Pentagon Waste and Whining

Almost one year ago the US Army kicked out six Arabic-speaking linguists after they were being accused of being gay. Today the Pentagon is moaning about the lack of Arabic-speakers in the armed forces and is considering wasting precious money and resources developing an automated computer program that translates Arabic without the use of a human translator.

Putting aside the ridiculous waste of money involved in developing such a program, the Pentagon should answer how this program can take the place of human intelligence and intuition in translating Arabic, which is a language full of subtleties based on education and location in the Arabic-speaking world. And the Pentagon should also answer why, during the period leading up to war in Iraq, it made the brilliant decision to sack six expert Arabic-speaking armed force members because they were gay. That act was absolutely unconscionable, especially considering the extremely short supply of Arabic speakers in all branches of the armed forces today.

As if we needed more reminding the ban on gays in the military is wrong from a moral view and wrong from a strategic one as well. Its implementation and enforcement robs the military of needed experts and divides soldiers based on characteristics that have little or nothing to do with their careers as soldiers. The ban on gays in the military should be lifted, just like it has for 95% of our NATO allies.
