Nostalgia For Old Dixie Isn't Just For Republicans

I'm so tired of hearing this bullshit about Dean's remarks aimed at getting poor whites in the South to vote for him. The Democratic party is going to keep losing elections until it admits that it has lost the South and start concentrating on building an electoral college majority without the help of the southern states.
The Republicans have achieved victory with the successful conclusion of Nixon's strategy of scaring white voters and it's time Democrats accepted this. We can win back the presidency without winning a single southern state. If we add Ohio back into the Democratic column then we win, if lose Ohio and win Arizona then we win, if we won back New Hampshire and West Viginia then we win.
All of this time and effort on building a so-called "Southern strategy" is a complete and utter waste of time and resources. The simple fact is that the South is increasingly out-of-step with the rest of the country on social and economic issues and the sooner we turn our attentions to winning where we can win the sooner we'll be back in power. Building a coalition of states with enough electoral votes isn't going to be easy, but as long as we keep concentrating our scarce resources in places Mississippi, Kentucky and Georgia we're going to keep losing the presidency.
