It Sucks Being Right

After I wrote my piece on the "Immoral Minority" of gay men who spread STDs and HIV without telling their partners I received several comments back privately which accused me of being a sexual puritan as well as "judgmental."

I'm no sexual puritan, you can ask any of my ex-boyfriends about that and as for being judgmental if there's one thing the gay community is lacking it's judgments. The "If it feels good do it" attitude is costing lives and leading to ruination for all of us, and I have a right to make judgments about what I feel is right and wrong for the future of my community.

Spreading disease is wrong and criminal and I have zero patience for those who argue that it's both partners responsibility. That's bullshit and they know it. If I drive drunk and kill someone is it partly their fault because they were walking on the road? Sex is not inherently dangerous unless someone is carrying a disease and if they are and know it it's their responsibility to let their partner know, and if asked to admit the truth.

And proving my point here's a letter I received today from a guy I have been chatting with on-line since I moved to Seattle in 1999. We've never had sex or even met.

My dear online friends

I hope this message finds you all well and happy.  I am sending this to everyone whom I have been in contact with either just chatting online or in fact as a sexual partner.  You have a right to know as either an online friend / acquaintance or as a sexual friend.

WIth somewhat  of a heavy heart, I am emailing you to inform you that I have jsut been diagnoses as bieng HIV+.  At this point I do not know when I was infected.  My last HIV test was about a year ago and that was negative.

I will be making an appointment with a doctor to find out what my viral load is and all the rest associated with being HIV.

Just to leat you know I am not sick, I am feeling 100%.

If we have only chatted, I wanted to let you know my new status in case that affects us eventually meeting - either as friends or as sex partners.

And certainly if we have had sex then, I urge you to take the test.

I hope you will keep in touch, since you have touched me in some way.

Take care and god bless.  Peace

I hate being proven right about this type of thing and as I see person after person around me becoming positive I have less and less sympathy for those who shout the same tired arguments about "partner responsibility." The immoral minority amongst us is a greater danger than Jerry Falwell, George W. Bush and pat Robertson combined and the sad thing is, they're supposed to be our closest friends.
