Are Liberals Too Nice?
Is the problem with liberalism that its practitioners are too nice, not willing to get their hands bloody in the fierce hand-to-hand combat for national politics?
Yes... and no. Liberals on the whole are thinkers and prefer long, reasoned discussion to short, expletive and insult-filled soundbites. Conservatives have mastered this art and run circles around the left, whether it be on radio or TV. Another sad fact is that many liberals are grim and humorless, afraid to make light of any situation because the world is such a sad, sad place. Conservatives love to laugh and make fun, while the liberals you see are usually glowering in silence, with prim and disapproving looks on their faces.
I'm thinking about this today because Seattle's local NPR station, KUOW, is doing an on-air broadcast on the same topic. Also the NY Times today had an article about the success of a liberal consortium in buying up 5 radio stations in 5 of the top media markets in the country. If the programming is good I'll listen to it, and there are some glimmers of hope with the mention of Al Franken as a possibility. But then you hear mentions of some other liberal possibilities, like Jim Hightower. Jim Hightower speaks like he has Tourette's Syndrome and is generally not funny.
My politics are generally on the left and I'd like to see liberal hosts who can skewer the Republicans with the same zeal and humor that Republicans skewer us. What I don't want to hear, and what I fear will be happening, is an on-air monotonous funeral dirge of all that is wrong with the world today, punctuated with self-righteous pronouncements on the need for "Diversity" and "Inclusivity."
We'll wait and see but I hope the left gets its act together and most importantly gains a sense of humor, because without that this liberal project will be consigned to the dustbin of humor like all the failed projects of that past.
