Pilates

Did I tell you I started training with a Pilates instructor?

Yes, it's true. Monday was my first hour long session. Pilates is interesting and a bit frustrating because it involves a breathing pattern that is the exact opposite of that which we use in Bikram yoga. It's also very small amounts of weight and I am used to really pushing heavy loads. You switch from machine to machine and use a roller on the floor, and it's all very interesting but not too invigorating and I love a rush after exercise.

For these reasons I think I'm going to cut the Pilates workouts down to once a week and train with a trainer twice a week.

The Problem With Haiti

Oh where to begin....

Is there a problem in the world that cannot be laid at the footsteps of the United States? Evidentially not and the chorus of  "It's the fault of the US" has begun. Although this time it's hard to see how the US can be blamed for the problems of miserable Haiti, a nation that has seen nothing but tragedy since its violent slave rebellion 200 years ago.

The US intervened in Haiti 10 years ago to restore its democratically elected president, Aristide, to power. The US also has given Haiti over $100 million in direct economic aid since then and forgiven Haiti's debts. Yet what does Haiti today have to show for it? Corrupt, poor and AIDS afflicted, Haiti is like a mini-Zaire transplanted to the Caribbean. I can guarantee you if Haiti's current president Aristide is removed from power someone worse will come in and loot the treasury in the fine tradition established by corrupt black leaders all over the world.

So what's the US to do? If it weren't for the prospect of waves of poor Haitian refugees flooding Florida I'd say the answer is easy:  do nothing. Haiti holds no economic or strategic interests for the US and until it can show the tiniest amount of self-discipline and good governance the US should stay out of Haiti. Support efforts by the Haiti's former colonial rulers, France, or the regional economic grouping of the Caribbean Community, but until the Haitians learn to take care of themselves the US should let Haiti burn.

If there's a coup then wall Haiti off with Coast Guard boats and return the refugees to their country, or let them stay at Guantanomo. Haiti is not our problem, it's the problem of Haitians themselves, let them solve it.
