WPA Art

I love old WPA posters and thanks to Jockohomo I found a great repository of them on-line. I wish someone would come up with the great idea to reproduce them for collection today. Their graphics and message are wonderful and I'd like to have a few hanging around.

Flyover Land

SUGAR LAND, Tex. -- This is the home of Britton Stein, who describes George W. Bush as "a man, a man's man, a manly man," and Al Gore as "a ranting and raving little whiny baby."

Forty-nine years old, Stein is a husband, a father, a landscaper and a Republican. He lives in a house that has six guns in the closets and 21 crosses in the main hallway. His wife cuts his hair with electric clippers. His three daughters aren't embarrassed when he kisses them on their cheeks. He loves his family, hamburgers and his dog. He believes in God, prays daily and goes to church weekly. He has a jumbo smoker in his back yard and a 40-foot tree he has climbed to hang Christmas lights. He has a pickup truck that he has filled with water for the Fourth of July parade, driving splashing kids around a community where Boy Scouts plant American flags in the yards. His truck is a Chevy. His beer is Bud Light. His savior is Jesus Christ. His neighbors include Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), the House majority leader, who says of Sugar Land, "I think it is America."

I've heard about these places, if you look down when flying between Seattle/San Francisco/Los Angeles and New York/DC you can see there is a big place in the middle that's all flat. Now I know why I never want to go there.

Shane in LA

I went to LA on Friday to see friends and go to a housewarming party Sunday.

My friend Chamonix has moved into a new apartment and I wanted to help her out a bit with the move. She had come to San Francisco in February to help me with my new home so I thought it was only fair to return the favor. We had a great time, but then again we always do. The weather was hot, like 90 degrees every day I was there.

So I spent Friday and part of Saturday with Chamonix and then I went to my friend John's new home, which is in the Harvard Heights section of LA. He and his boyfriend Frederic just bought an absolutely HUGE and beautiful old craftsman/victorian house with hardwood floors, built-ins everywhere, a separate staircase for the servants and a guest house. This house is the house I've always wanted, expansive, cool and very, very warm and comforting.

I took off with John, Frederic and their sister-in-law Lisa, who I met once previously in Seattle and we went to see a play and then go to The Factory. I took with me some cash, credit cards but I was sans cellphone They wanted to leave before me so I told them to write down the address of the house and I'd just stay and dance a while by myself and then take a cab home. I stayed, I danced and then around 4:00 AM decided I wanted to leave, but unfortunately I had lost the address of the house and had no idea where it was.

So to make a long story short I ended up going to The Standard, The Argyle and the Four Seasons in search of a room. They were all booked but finally referred me to the the L'Ermitage Beverly Hills where I crashed until I could get someone's number to tell me where John and Frederic lived. My boyfriend was so nice about it, especially considering I woke him up at 4:30 AM calling from Beverly Hills looking to see if he had either John or Chamonix's numbers.

Now I'm back, it's so warm and sunny here it's amazing. Spring is most definitely in bloom.
