Fahrenheit 9/11 - The Lies of Michael Moore Christopher Hitchens, renowned leftist writer and the owner of both scathing wit and a razor sharp intellect, tears apart Michael Moore's new movie here. Following are some choice bits from his review. To describe this film as dishonest and demagogic would almost be to promote those terms to the level of respectability. To describe this film as a piece of crap would be to run the risk of a discourse that would never again rise above the excremental. To describe it as an exercise in facile crowd-pleasing would be too obvious. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness. It is also a spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of "dissenting" bravery. If Michael Moore had had his way, Slobodan Milosevic would still be the big man in a starved and tyrannical Serbia. Bosnia and Kosovo would have been cleansed and annexed. If Michael Moore had been listened to, Afghanistan would still be under Taliban rule, and Kuwait would have remained part of Iraq. And Iraq itself would still be the personal property of a psychopathic crime family, bargaining covertly with the slave state of North Korea for WMD. You might hope that a retrospective awareness of this kind would induce a little modesty. To the contrary, it is employed to pump air into one of the great sagging blimps of our sorry, mediocre, celeb-rotten culture. Rock the vote, indeed. Madonna the Jewess The more I think about Madonna laying claim to the mantle of Judaism and appropriating Jewish symbols, like the Tefillin, for profane use in her concerts the more pissed off I become.                                                                                        Tefillin, as it's meant to be worn I suppose Judaism was in line to become Madonna's next religious fascination and the latest religion, after Catholicism and Hinduism, to be exploited by the Material Girl for commercial purposes, but it still drives me crazy. As someone who has undertaken the path of conversion to Judaism with utmost thought and seriousness it bothers me that Madonna can waltz into the nearest Kaballah center and decide she's all of a sudden a "nice Jewish girl." I don't care if Madonna supposedly keeps the sabbath or not, she hasn't gone into the mikvah, she hasn't studied Jewish history and no Jewish woman would EVER wear holy, male religious garb in front of millions like Madonna has with her profane exploitation of the Tefillin at her concerts. The kaballah is all nice and cool right now but things have reached a point of extreme craziness when Hollywood stars are all of a sudden taking Jewish names and eating kosher food, a la Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. The question that remains for Madonna is now that she's exploited Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism what's next? Will her next tour feature her parading around the stage in an Islamic burkha while the Arabic letters for "God" appear on a floating screen behind her? After that will she shave her head and chant while wearing the saffron robes of a Buddhist Monk? And then what? Madonna as a fire-loving Zoroastrian followed by Madonna as Amish being pulled around the stage in a wagon? 1:57:46 PM    Comment on my obvious brilliance []
