Fires

Today as I drove home from work along the I-280, usually a really serene and beautiful drive, there was thick, grey pall of smoke that hung across the valleys on the way back to San Francisco. It now smells like smoke outside and after watching the news I figured out why: there's a huge fire in Napa and the smoke is hanging over San Francisco and the valley.

Fires are normal in California this time of year. Anyone remember the Oakland fires in 1991? I don't know what's going on outside but there are fire trucks all over the city tonight and in the canyon we live I pray someone hasn't accidentally set some fire that will sweep though our neighborhood like a flood.

It’s funny what you think at a time like this. I wonder what I’d take if I had to evacuate. My boyfriend is in NY until Thursday so it would be just me. I think I’d take the cats, my laptop and my watch, my passport and wallet and some clothes and then I’d get out, quick.

More Post-Modernist, Deconstructionist Bullshit

In my continuing quest to prove just how nonsensical Derrida/Foucault-style deconstructionist criticism REALLY is I found the following piece of writing, which rivals any I've seen so far for complete inexplicableity and gibberish. Point to anyone who can explain what the fuck the writer is talking about.

The move from a structuralist account in which capital is understood to structure social relations in relatively homologous ways to a view of hegemony in which power relations are subject to repetition, convergence, and rearticulation brought the question of temporality into the thinking of structure, and marked a shift from a form of Althusserian theory that takes structural totalities as theoretical objects to one in which the insights into the contingent possibility of structure inaugurate a renewed conception of hegemony as bound up with the contingent sites and strategies of the rearticulation of power.
