Some of you have asked what happened with the county council and the empty lot (well, there's an abandoned business on it) they wanted to sell. The plan was to sell it to Walgreen's and fund several worthy projects, including a library for our end of the county, with the proceeds.
They voted almost unanimously NOT to sell the land. The only council member who voted FOR selling it was my representative. Although I got the feeling he only voted that way because he'd promised to.
One council member was quoted in the paper as saying that it would have been like giving away his seed corn. I found that interesting. I am not a farmer, although I come from a line of Iowa farmers. But it seems to me that the point of seed corn is to plant it so you can get more corn!
So now we still have no library money, or money for these myriad other projects, and we still have this unsightly empty lot downtown that is bringing in no revenue whatsoever.
And...I can't write any scathing letters to the editor of the paper because I serve on the library board!
It was a fairly quiet weekend here. Friday night we had Nanette & Jesse over for a pizza supper. I made the individual pizzas I told you about a couple of weeks ago. It's a funny meal for entertaining because everyone eats at different times. Nanette brought a salad, so we chatted and ate our salad with the guys while our pizzas baked. That evening was one of the reasons why I love our kitchen/breakfast/family room setup. The guys sat at the table while Nanette and I hovered around the island of the kitchen and we could all hear it each other and no one was isolated in another room.
I made peach crisp from my new favorite cookbook, Weight Watcher's All American Cookbook. Only 3 points per serving! Of course we took care of that... we plunked Emeril Lagasse's buttermilk ice cream on top of it! The ice cream tastes like the cream cheese frosting you put on top of carrot cake. Excellent with the peach crisp. Emeril serves it with flambeed peaches, but that's not really my schtick.
Saturday Mensa Boy and I went and ordered our ceramic tile for the new backsplash in the kitchen. Some people can get by forever without a washable backsplash. But the wall behind my stove looks pretty bad now. It will be a dark blue... kind of the color of the cobalt blue fiesta plates. Scattered through randomly will be 8 white tiles with fruit on them...slightly raised off the surface of the tile. A peach, a pear, cherries and grapes...times 2. We plan to install in a couple of weeks.
We also ran through a few furniture stores. We were looking for bedroom furniture, but did find 3 or 4 dining room sets we liked. Isn't that just the way it goes? The dining room is third on our list. First, bedroom. Second, family room. Then dining room if there are any funds left over.
Next weekend I'll buy paint and start on the first floor. I was going to do it this weekend but it was a sales tax holiday and driving around was pretty crazy. Besides, I told Mensa Boy, if I have the paint here, I'll want to be painting and not taking the kids to the pool or their friends houses, etc. Better to get it next weekend. School starts pretty soon.
