Tonight is "Meet the Teacher" night at school. This is always a big time of anticipation for my kids, as they wait to see if their close buddies are in their class. It's a big time of anticipation for me, too, as I hope I like the elementary teacher and feel I can communicate with her, and as I set up emailing with the junior high teachers.
But this year it's even more nerve-racking for the boys, as they don't have that many kids they've connected with. Taylor has only one boy he's hoping to see in his class. So that's a 1-in-4 chance for him. Although I know he'll be fine if the little guy isn't in with him, he'll still be disappointed. The other little boy moved here from Minnesota a few months before we did.
But Taylor has friends from Cub Scouts, so I'm sure there will be plenty of kids he can connect with in his classroom.
Nate really only has one friend. He has other guys he's cordial with, but he will be hoping Ryan is in many of his classes. It helps that they both are in a special literature class and band...that will be at least two classes together right off the bat.
Nate has been mourning Ryan these past two weeks. Ryan went out of town for a week and now he's back but his cousins are visiting. As a result, Nate has been bonding more with Taylor, and keeps hoping Taylor doesn't get an invite to go play somewhere.
Ryan's absence puts more pressure on Nate at the pool too. Girls see him across the water and flock to him to talk to him. The first thing they ask is "Where's Ryan?". Yesterday a new girl was there and I heard one of the other girls say..."that's Nate. Ryan's friend". So Nate has to be polite and talk to them, instead of just standing by while chick-magnet Ryan entertains them.
On an unrelated note, I got the funniest piece of spam yesterday! Usually I just delete them out of my Postini account, where they land after being filtered. I just scan down them, making sure no one I know landed in there by mistake, and hit the delete button.
But every once in a while, a spammer makes it through the filters to my actual Outlook mailbox. I forward these back to Postini so they filter them out in the future. But in the process of forwarding, they email opens and you can see the first few lines. And so I was sucked in. And now you are:
