Even those of us who are religious about software updates and antivirus scanning can fall prey to some of the latest worm-like viruses out there.

Yesterday I was one of them. So far today I haven't gotten any, but yesterday I received several emails from various servers around the country, Circuit City and Startribune.com to name a couple, who were were informing me that an email I sent them had a virus on it.

Problem is, I hadn't sent them emails.

The worm turned on me and did it on my behalf.

A new worm, discovered yesterday, with the word "sobig" as part of it's name, sends emails out from unsuspecting computers and puts bogus return email addresses in the headers.  So, someone's infected computer generated a bunch of emails and had my "webmaster" address as the return.

So, their email hits a server, say Circuit City, and Circuit City's server detects the virus and then sends the "sender" a message saying the email was infected and it's been cleaned but by the way you have a virus.

No harm no fowl to me, except that I spent about 2 hours researching and scanning my computer to be sure I didn't have the virus, and trying to find out what happened.

It was an interesting day.
