Glub! 3 1/2 inches of rain fell last night in about 2 hours. I skipped out of Vacation Bible School after serving the meal and came home to be in the house by myself. I had no sooner closed the door when the thunder started. After about half an hour of thunderous warnings and lightning, the sky just opened up and the trees bent over. I was sure glad I didn't have to go out anymore! We don't seem to be getting any gentle, all day rains this summer. It's all violent stuff. But at least it's coming now. My water bill should take a big dive next month!
Yesterday the Orkin man finally came and it really hit me how sketchy service can be around here. Generally they come every other month on a certain day of the week, in a certain week. Orkin rescheduled me two times this past month, and so finally I started seeing little unwanted critters in my house. They always stress to me when I pay them to "Be sure to call between treatments if you see bugs. We'd be happy to come do another treatment for free, ma'am!" So Friday morning I called and told them I had several visitors in my house and I wanted them to come right away.
No return call Friday. I called again. No return call or visit Saturday. Finally Sunday night at 4:30 they left a message. "We're supposed to come on Wednesday anyway, so we'll do that if it's okay with you." Well, by this time I was deep into VBS and didn't have time to force them to come sooner, so I let it go. But I did let him know how much I didn't appreciate them when he came yesterday.
But really, this is such a common thing here. I don't know if it's a southern thing or what. But you can call and just not hear back. Or you can set an appointment with someone and they just don't show up. Or, they'll show up, but they don't call to confirm first. Or rescheduling. That's been a big thing lately. My dentist even rescheduled me today! Now I'm going at 8:30 this morning instead of 11:30. At least I still have an appointment. It took a month for me to get the appointment to get this crown in.
That's another thing! Many of these practitioners have so many patients that you can't get in! For Nate's allergies I waited 10 days to get an appointment. Then it was with an LPN. But when we got there, we waited half an hour and ended up seeing a doctor. "Oh, she wasn't busy so we sent her home." So they threw me into the doctor's over-loaded schedule instead. Nate's psychologist...you had to schedule out a month in advance. Of course, they had so many no-shows and cancellations, you usually could get invited to come in earlier.
So my assessment is...the builder-types and contractors are too busy and overloaded building all these homes. And the medical people are too overloaded because there aren't enough of them yet. So we need some medical people to move into all these homes these builders are building.
Now that I've solved all those problems....it's time for some work. I need to work for about an hour, go to the dentist, and then this afternoon I go back out to the farm to get some chickens. I'll get 10. They skipped me at the last butchering so he told me I could have as many as I want. We don't butcher again until September. But more than 10 can get hard on the pocketbook.
Then VBS again tonight. This is the last night where we make the meal and serve it. Friday night is a potluck. I'm going to make Tater Tot Hotdish. No one here as ever heard of it. And believe it or not, I've never made it...I've eaten tons of it...you can't be Lutheran or United Methodist in Minnesota without having a lot of Tate Tot Hotdish. So I need to dig up a recipe.
