It seemed like a good idea at the time....

I wonder if that's what Charlotte City Garbage officials were thinking Monday morning as they surveyed the damage to 30+ garbage trucks Sunday morning.

The Observer has a front page article about the incident this morning.  It seems somebody broke into the fenced-in lot, turned a bunch of the truck on and had a little demo derby with them!  "How could this happen?" You may ask.

Well, the keys were left in them.  And the lot had no security guard on patrol, not even a surveillance system.

The thinking (if you can call it that) has been that if one truck caught on fire it'd be best to have the keys in all of them so you could move the others out of the way before the fire jumped to them, burning down the entire fleet.

Things that make you go: "Hmmmm."

I watched about 5 minutes of the Democratic Convention last night.  They didn't have any coverage until 10 pm my time and it just wasn't worth trying to keep my eyes open for it.  Even Glenn Close was boring!  I wouldn't have minded catching some of Jimmy Carter's speech, but he spoke earlier and there was no coverage then, at least not on the major networks. I wasn't home much, so I didn't surf around for it.  They are playing clips of Clinton's speech on NPR this morning.  Some of the "bites" are pretty good.

I drove the school bus for the first time yesterday. I absolutely loved it! I need to work on my left turns, though. I keep cutting across about 6 inches of the center line with my back wheels. But I am one gooood cone weaver! Cassie passed me in her little Taurus about 5 minutes after I got on the road for the first time.  I suspected it was her, but wasn't sure until I saw her swivel her head around and take good, long look at me at a stoplight.

You know, I started this whole thing as a lark, and now I'm starting to think if I don't hate the kids too much I might actually really enjoy it!  And there's a good chance I won't really hate the kids. As it stands right now, I may only be driving the elementary route and it might be the one for my very own neighborhood.  So the kids will know me and they know I'll be able to talk to their parents pretty easily if there is an "issue".

That's it for today. I am to go register Nate for HIGH SCHOOL in a few minutes and then I must do some serious work for my Minneapolis employer. I leave you with this thought: Don't leave your keys in your car and don't buy Benchcraft furniture!
