Our church had our first National Night Out event last night. A lot of our friends and neighbors don't seem to know about National Night Out.  I guess we do because we came from a big city, which depends heavily on block clubs and NNO events to help with crime.

Our turnout was much lower than we expected, but we still had a fair amount of people coming and going.  We had EMS and Fire people there, and several officers from the Sheriff's Department. They brought 3 of their dogs. One is a bomb sniffer, one a drug sniffer and the other is missing persons dog.  One of the officers is a bit of a comedian. He explained that one dog was trained in Holland and speaks Dutch. The other was training in Czechoslovakia and speaks German. The missing persons dog was from Tennessee and speaks Redneck. They just say "Git 'im"!  The dogs were the biggest hit with the kids. The boy scouts were also there and had a campground set up and they made cobbler over a fire and we gave that away with free ice cream and tea.

I mentioned to several people that the fire trucks and dogs should get people to stop to see what was going on. But if we really wanted to draw a crowd, maybe we should start a little fire at the church. Billowing black smoke would surely get a bunch of people. No one wanted to do that.  But one of the guys says he can operate the fire department's "smoke house" so maybe we can have that next year.

I think we also should try to figure out a way to rig up a banner going across the road. People would drive right under it going by. I thought our signage was a little small.  The main thing is, everyone had a good time. I had good news to share with people about getting a new library, and we had a few people from our subdivision come down and meet neighbors.  Hopefully the church will think it's worthwhile enough to sponsor it again.

I didn't mention it to anyone last night, but here it is to YOU: Don't Buy Benchcraft Furniture!

Today I go to be tested for my bus driver's license. I found out yesterday I will only make the elementary run and it will only be in my neighborhood. They may also use me to fill in for stuff later too. But I'll have the opportunity to turn that down if I want. We have another sub for our school so I may not have to do that.  So...I get to drive my own kid. I still haven't asked about the pay. That's not really the important thing. It'll take so little of my time that I'll have plenty of time to devote to my other, main job.
