I seem to be having trouble getting school board news here. We have a paper that is published in our county seat, but they don't seem to report the school board meetings unless someone comes and raises a big stink about something.  For example, last month the athletic boosters from our school went to the board and went on and on telling them they need to stop ignoring our school and fix the hole in the gym floor and and the cafeteria ceiling and put lights and a fence around our girls softball field. The girls have won the state championship something like 6 of the last 7 years and they have had to work around darkness all that time.  Our track program has produced an Olympian and he's never even run at our school because we don't have a track.

Even the school board site itself doesn't have updated meeting minutes on it. School stuff pretty much just gets spread by word of mouth.

Pretty much everything around here gets spread by word of mouth and that's probably why this is the "gossipiest" place I've ever lived. Our local newspaper is basically burglaries and car crashes, our tv news is Charlotte or Spartanburg.  You find out about stuff from other people.

So if you move here, and you don't get involved in the local community and get to know people, you just aren't going to find out what's going on. And what you do find out will probably be about a third wrong, as it will be laced with opinions.

To me, that's just not real good. But then, when we had a kindergartner accidentally put on the wrong bus, and the bus form just gave a road name and no house number or phone number, and the little tyke couldn't say his last name, that close-knit community-thing really worked out.  "Why, I think that might be so-and-so's little nephew. Looks just like him, doesn't he? Didn't that family buy that house on such and such road when their old one burned down? I think his Dad works at whatever place."  And so the little guy was delivered safely home.
