Numbers can Make One Dizzy
I have been sorting through those links I got from the Department of Labor people who emailed me. It is interesting but frustrating. There is a lot of data there. So far it has become evident to me that our latest bout of severe unemployment in this country is different in one significant way from others. In past labor contractions the majority of people were unemployed for less time than now and when they did find work they found work that improved their financial situation. However, that is no longer the case with the majority having to take quite significant losses in pay in order to stay employed.
I am aware that this has been reported elsewhere. We do not do longitudinal studies to follow them over time to see if they were able to move on in time so that is a blank in the studies.
I have not spent as much time poking around as I would have liked. I just learned today that my only remaining uncle has a large aneurysm that is pressing on his renal arteries. He is in kidney failure. It is inoperable and he refuses dialysis. It is not entirely certain how many more days he has. I am in a bit of shock.
He is typical of all the people in my family. When the end comes near we don’t find a fight for a bit more time to be worthwhile. We prefer to remain at home with loved ones quietly. If I remember the deaths of all the significant relatives in my family they have come with quiet dignity.
I may have to take off for a few days to go to Montana to be with my aunt.
