SUNDAY REFLECTIONS 8/03/03
Seabiscuit
I saw Seabiscuit last night and I was prepared to be
disappointed ~ particularly after reading several luke
warm reviews.
Instead I was quite impressed with a movie that had a
slow and important build , good character development
and effectively played out against the depression and
despair of the 1930's.
Perhaps one of the reasons I thoroughly enjoyed it
is that I owned and rode a horse for several years.
His name was SCOUT and I fully understand the bond
that can exist between a horse and its trainer, owner
or rider.
Scout was my connection to nature and I rode him
every day, at full gallop, in the vineyards and then
washed him and cleaned his hoofs after each workout.
He knew exactly what I wanted when we rode ~ all I had
to do was click my tongue audibly and he was off in
running through the vineyards.
We were one in full flight ~ a blur of joy as we raced
through the grapes ~ together feeling our connection
to the earth and each other.
That same feeling is wonderfully captured in this
movie for Seabiscuit is not about David beating Goliath
as Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in the match race
of the decade ~ no , this movie is about love ~ the love
that can exist between a man and his horse and how
that love can touch everyone around them and even a
nation.
And how that love helped Seabiscuit and his rider heal
each other when both were disabled by injuries.
My favorite scene was when they were both recuperating
in a field together ~ stumbling and groping in their own
respective pain and yet it was obvious they were using
each others love to heal themselves.
This movie is a love story that anyone who has an animal
that they love ~ will thoroughly identify with.
Prepare to be touched ~ for I certainly was.
