UNDERSTANDING
BRANDO
|
To understand Marlon Brando
you must first understand
his childhood.
Both parents were alcoholics .
His mother was emotionally
unavailable .
His father emotionally
tortured both Marlon and
his mother.
Brando never emotionally
recovered from this
deprivation and that's what
he brought to the screen
and ran away from his
whole life .
" Hey , STELLA ! "
Stanley Kowalski primal cry was
etched within his
wounded childhood.
" I coulda been a contender ,
I coulda been someone, instead
of a bum .. "
Brando's Terry Malloy speaking to
his brother who betrayed him
in ON THE WATERFRONT
was the betrayal of his
father which lived within his
tortured soul.
To understand Brando you
must see One Eyed Jacks ,
Brando's only effort at
directing , which critics
considered a disaster.
I consider it one of the top
10 sleeper films of all time.
Set on the Monterey coast
it follows the path of
Johnny Rio , a notorious
gun fighter gone straight ,
whose past catches up to
him as he is wrongly
betrayed by his father figure
former friend and sidekick
Karl Malden.
He is brutally tortured by
Malden , just as he was by his
father, but he is nursed back to
health by the love of a young
mexican girl ~ just like he was by
his mother.
He eventually evens the score
with Malden , the town sheriff , in
a nerve racking jail escape and
personal gun duel that left me
breathless.
The movie was brilliantly cast
and Brando coached exceptional
performances from everyone,
including himself.
There was an inspired and special
talent directing that film.
To understand Brando you
must understand that One Eyed Jacks
was autobiographical .
When it was snubbed by the movie
critics ~ it was the final parental
emotional stab by his father.
He never directed again ~ which
was our profound loss.
To understand Marlon Brando
see One Eyed Jacks .
