lead over Kerry is the Conduct of war in Iraq and the Conduct of war on terror ( according to the latest Economist Poll of 10,000 Americans )
This is why Karl Rove has a vested interest in the continued quagmire in Iraq because a large portion of the American public still see it as the ongoing War on Terror and Bush can only be elected as the successful commander-in-chief of this war on terror ~ although, in reality, his actions have made our country far less safe than before 9/11/ and his illegal occupation of Iraq is failing badly.
The arrogance of this administration is almost mind - boggling but this is just the beginning of Bush's blatant politics of fear .
By the time we get close to November we will be on the verge of a major alert ( again, nothing specific just alarming chatter ) and voters will be asked this question ~
ARE YOU GOING TO LET AL-QAEDA DECIDE THIS ELECTION , LIKE THEY DID IN SPAIN , OR ARE YOU GOING TO DEFY THEM AND VOTE FOR BUSH.
In other words, a vote against Bush will be deemed unpatriotic and that just may be enough to swing the crucial battleground states to Bush.
Of course, the reality is that the people of Spain were fed up with their administration that willfully lied to and deceived them and they threw them out for just that reason ~ which should be an inspiration to Americans who have also been lied to and deceived by the Bush administration.
I keep thinking of these words by Herman Goering ~
Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country. - Hermann Goering: quote verified at http://www.snopes.com/quotes/goering.htm
Of course, the Europeans have seen this all before with Germany in the late 1930's and are anxiously watching this election with bated breath .
Will Bush's politics of fear work in America ?
Not if we see through this obvious sham and denounce and replace Bush and the perpetrators who have brought our country to the edge of international disgrace and embarrassing shame.
