" WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW "
MY REVIEW
This movie is not about quantum physics or the Law of Uncertainty ~ it's about how love is a rabbit hole to another reality or state of consciousness.
A reality of soul consciousness which can only be accessed through love.
Note the extended use of the hypothalamus in this film but the film barely explores the importance of the hypothalamus ~ which I will now do.
The hypothalamus, located in the limbic system of the brain, is a small mass of nerve cells at the top of the brain stem ~ which plays a part out of all proportion to its size in the body's economy.
Through signals from the brain, it regulates heart beat, rate of breathing, body temperture and the cycle of wakefulness to sleep.
In addition, it acts as a kind of biological timer by its effect on the body's hormonal processes. As such, the ultimate control of all growth glands rests with the hypothalamus.
Think of it like the hormonostat of the body ~ similar to the thermostat regulating the room temperture of your home.
Now, in terms of understanding this movie, let's move to its function relative to the nervous system and emotions.
Guyton's Textbook of Medical Physiology is quite explicit in this regard :
The hypothalamus receives signals from almost all possible sources in the nervous system. Thus, when a person is exposed to pain, a portion of the pain signal is transmitted to the hypothalamus . Likewise, when a person experiences some powerful, depressing or exciting thought, a portion of the signal is transmitted to the hypothalamus.
But now let's concentrate on emotions and feelings . Manter's Essentials of Clinical Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology applies itself to this question:
Mental processes in the brain which possess strong emotional content are fully capable of bringing forth hypothalamic reactions.
Stay with me now , for this leads to the question of pain, and in particular, the pain and pleasure centers within the hypothalamus . Guyton describes experiments with monkeys pertaining to the stimulation of these centers within the hypothalamus and the findings are directly applicable to my review :
1. Prolonged stimulation of the pain center for 24 hours or more causes the animal to become severely sick and can actually lead to death.
2. It is particularly interesting that stimulation of the pain center can frequently inhibit the pleasure center completely , illustrating that painful memories can take precedence over joyful memories.
3. It is obvious that emotional patterns controlling the sympathetic and parasympathetic centers of the hypothalamus can cause wide varieties of peripheral psychosomatic effects.
Now, before I make my point in this review, let's discuss the three categories of pain ~ the first two being physical.
A. External pain ( A surface injury, bruise or scrape )
B. Internal pain ( A headache, tumor, ulcer, etc )
C. Psychic pain ( The apparent separation from love )
The supposition I am making here on the basis of credible accumulated research, as well as my own personal experience and studies, is that the pain of feeling rejected, unloved, alone and seemingly separated from love is the most devastating pain that can be humanly experienced and obviously is capable of bringing forth hypothalamic reactions which could effect our well being , physical health and emotional growth.
And that is precisely what happened in this film . The woman in this film had been shockingly betrayed by her cheating husband ~ the pain overrides her joy and love and she retreats into a grey world of ego consciousness ~ where she lives in constant fear. Her heart is closed and her painful memories have taken precedence over her joyful memories. Emotionally she had stopped growing. Her whole attitude is There is no Choice except fear and going through the motions.
A young joyful boy, representing another choice of consciousness and reality, leads her into the rabbit hole where she takes a risk and meets someone, her heart is touched and the buried feelings bubble to the surface.
She begins to see the relationship with her ex husband through different eyes ~ eyes not clouded by wishful thinking and denial . She realizes she has grown from that experience and definitely now has another choice .
The same thing happens to us when we are seemingly severed from love as children through divorce, abuse, separation or neglect . Emotionally we stop growing ~ much like I did as a six year old child when I was taken away from my beloved grandfather.
Our lives than become an unconscious quest where we eventually re-enact that separation inorder to go beyond the pain to the joy beneath . The problem is that most people never get beyond the pain ~ because they have no idea that love and joy lie beneath their present struggle and state of Ego consciousness.
As such, love is the ultimate rabbit hole because it forces us to surrender to a force far greater than the ego ~ for love alone is deepest within each one of us.
This film leaves us with many questions . How many of us are running away form love ? How many of us are still emotionally stuck in childhood where our psychic pain overrode our initial joy and innocence.
How many of us still refuse to surrender and go through the rabbit hole of love to another reality ~ where we not only realize we are not alone but that we have always been loved.
This film is a metaphor for the journey of life where we are all continually being called to the path of the heart , but few listen and fewer still respond. But also ~ how we are all interconnected and that our hearts journey is certainly not random.
The physicists bottom line on this film: Quantum physics is about matter at its most fundamental levels and matter's interactions; it's not about spirituality ~ but I would argue and can definitely prove that matter at its most fundamental levels is subject to the urge to unite , ( the strong force in the atom ) and that force exists in each one of us and can easily be called love and, as such, it's all about spirituality .
Lastly, this must see film can be summed up in this wonderful quote from The Little Prince ;
It is only through the heart that one can see clearly , what is essential is invisible to the human eye.
